Volunteer As A Coach

Coaches are essential to the success of Mason City Youth Hockey and our mission of providing quality youth hockey opportunities for families across North Iowa. They are often the most visible and impactful volunteers within each team, helping players grow both on and off the ice.

Head and assistant coaches in MCYH come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have previous youth, high school, junior, or collegiate hockey experience, some have coached in other sports or organizations, and others are stepping behind the bench for the first time. Regardless of experience level, our coaches share a common commitment to teaching, mentoring, and creating a positive environment for young athletes.

Many of our coaches are parents of current players, making coaching a rewarding way to be involved in your child’s development and the hockey community. MCYH also welcomes community members and former players with hockey experience who are interested in giving back and helping the next generation grow the game.

Interested in Becoming a Coach?

Approval of a coach for a team requires the majority approval vote of the MCYH Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will notify coaches whether they have been accepted or not after the vote is completed.

Coaching Requirements

The following registrations, screenings, and trainings are required before participating on the ice in any capacity as a coach with Mason City Youth Hockey (MCYH). Please note that USA Hockey registration and SafeSport training must be renewed annually, while background screening is valid for two years. Proof of completion for all required registrations and trainings must be submitted to the MCYH Registrar prior to the start of the season.

Coaches Clinic

In addition to the above registration and training, all Coaches must complete a USA Hockey Coaching Clinic each year before December 31st. USA Hockey provides multiple online coaching clinic opportunities, which are typically posted in September. Coaches that do not complete the yearly clinic by December 31st will not be permitted to continue working on the ice with the team. Once a coach reaches Level 4 of the Coaching Education Program, 5 credit hours of continuing education within each subsequent three-year period must be completed.
